As temperatures rise, so are gas prices

As most of you have probably noticed, it’s not a bargain at the gas pump. gas_pumps

Gas prices nationwide are at the highest they’ve been since last September. As the weather gets warmer, demand also increases.

AAA said a short-term peak “should”  be within sight.

While the average price in the U.S. is $3.54 a gallon, it’s averaging $3.33 a gallon in Mississippi.

In Northeast Mississippi, you can fill up at some stations for $3.23 a gallon in New Albany. In Tupelo, the cheapest is at $3.33.

Michael Green, a spokesman for AAA, told Oilprice demand for gasoline is expected to increase as a long winter starts to ease across much of the country.

“Given how cold it had been earlier in the year, it would not be surprising to see pent-up demand result in significant gasoline consumption in the coming weeks,” he said.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration said demand for gasoline for the week ending March 21 increased 5.7 percent from the previous week to 9 million barrels per day. With winter fading across much of the country, Green said demand should increase as the summer driving season starts to approach. Read the rest of this entry »

Tupelo has lowest – and highest – gas prices in region

leave a comment »

In today’s sweep around Northeast Mississippi to check on gas prices, we have Tupelo having both the lowest gas price in the area, as well as the highest.

At the low-end of the scale is Sam’s Club on North Gloster Street, where a member price gets you a gallon at $2.96. Not far behind is Sherman at $2.97.

In Tupelo, prices go up from there, with many stations at $3.09 – which also happens to be the highest price in the region.

Yes, we know there are ethanol-free stations that tack on 10 to 20 cents more a gallon, but we don’t include those in our survey.

Elsewhere around the region:

  • Amory 3.06
  • Belden $3.09
  • Booneville $3.02
  • Corinth $3.06
  • Fulton $3.01
  • New Albany $3.05
  • Oxford $3.06
  • Ripley: $3.07
  • Starkville $3.03

leave a comment »

It’s the last weekend before Christmas, so the streets will be busy and the stores crowded.

If you’re looking to gas up around Northeast Mississippi to head into Tupelo to do some shopping, you’ll find the lowest price at Sam’s Club at $2.86 – if you’re  a member. Around the All-America City, $2.89 is mostly the going rate.

And what happened to Murphy Express on West Main Street, which was leading the state for a while with the lowest price? Today, they’re $2.97.

At least they’re under $3 like most places around the region.

The highest price in the region can be found in Oxford and Ripley again, at $3.07.

Statewide, the average is $3.03, while the U.S. average is $3.22

Elsewhere across Northeast Mississippi:

  • Corinth $2.95
  • Fulton $2.89

Most Northeast Miss. gas prices still under $3

with one comment

Some good news/bad news about gas prices in Northeast Mississippi. Pumping gas image

The good news is that most prices are still under $3 a gallon. Folks in Ripley and Oxford are paying the most at $3.07 a gallon.

That matches the statewide average. The national average is $3.22 a gallon.

The bad news is that Tupelo doesn’t have the title of having the lowest gas price in the state. That goes to Southaven at $2.83.

But Sam’s Club in Tupelo is right behind at $2.84, which also happens to be the lowest price in Northeast Mississippi, at least for now.

Murphy Express on West Main Street in Tupelo, which had been the low-price leader for several weeks, is at $2.89, along with its neighbors on the corner, Dodge’s Store and J’s Mart. Enter conspiracy theory comments below….

Anyway, here are prices elsewhere in the region: Read the rest of this entry »

Tupelo again has state’s cheapest gas price

leave a comment »

A few weeks back, Tupelo had the cheapest gas price in the state, and it could be found at Murphy Express on West Main Street.

Tupelo again has the cheapest gas today, but this time, it’s at the Walmart-Sam’s Club gas station on North Gloster Street.

It’s at $2.79. At the Murphy Express, it’s 2.85, so it’s no longer the low-price leader it has been the past month – at least for now.

And as usual, gas prices vary widely in Tupelo, selling for as much as $3.07. Three other cities – Oxford, Ripley and Starkville – match that price as well.

Prices across the region:

  • Amory $3.01
  • Belden $2.99
  • Booneville $3.05
  • Corinth $3.06
  • Fulton $2.99
  • New Albany $2.99
  • Pontotoc $3.04
  • Sherman $2.97

Gas prices back up, but Tupelo still has lowest

with 3 comments

As expected, gas prices are back up in Northeast Mississippi, as well as the rest of the country, from last week.

Higher prices at the wholesale level, along with rising oil prices, meant higher prices at the pump.

Still, prices are roughly 10 cents cheaper than a year ago.

The lowest price in the region, as well as the state, is $2.79 at the Murphy Express on West Main Street in Tupelo, as of 10 a.m. Elsewhere in Tupelo, it’s $2.89 at Sam’s to $2.97 at Kroger.

The highest price is $3.07 at several stops, including Corinth, Ripley and Starkville.

  • Amory $2.99
  • Belden $2.99
  • Booneville $3.01
  • Fulton $2.99
  • New Albany $2.99
  • Oxford $3.04
  • Pontotoc $3.03
  • Sherman $2.95

Murphy Express open in Tupelo, selling gas cheap

leave a comment »

Murphy Express is open on the corner of West Main and Maynard streets in Tupelo, having had a soft opening in Friday. A grand IMG_5807opening is planned in the next week or two.

And it seems there might be a bit of a price war going on. Earlier this morning, it was selling gas at a whopping low (for Tupelo anyway) $2.58 a gallon, according to

Biz Buzz drove by moments ago, and it’s back up to $2.78. That’s a pretty wild price swing. And of course, the Dodge’s Store and J’s Store also are at $2.78. The Kroger at Crosstown – at least for now – was at $2.86.

The Murphy Express store manager said the store, open 24 hours a day, will have the lowest prices on beer, cigarettes and gas in Tupelo. Works for me.

The store employs 13 people.
