Goodwill is opening its retail store in Tupelo on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 9 a.m.
The store is filling up to 55 full-time jobs, and Goodwill expects some 146,000 customer visits in the first year. It also expects to have an economic impact of $5 million annually, which includes wages, sales taxes, rent and utilities.
The store is located in the former Staples office supply store next to PetSmart, behind Cracker Barrel and adjacent to Home Depot in the Cross Creek Shopping Center off Barnes Crossing Road.
The 24,000-square-foot space was a Staples store from early 2001 until July 2015.
The retail store, whose official address is 1046 Cross Creek Drive in Saltillo, will have a VIP preview and light breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., followed by a ribbon-cutting and grand opening.
“This will be our second store in the Tupelo area, and we are thrilled to be expanding our operations in Mississippi,” said Tony Martini, President and CEO of Goodwill. “We deeply appreciate the support of area shoppers and donors at our McCullough Bookstore and North Gloster Attended Donation Center, and look forward to building deeper bonds with the community as we work to train and employ individuals to provide world-class customer service.”
Following the Aug. 23 ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m., there will be hourly drawings for gift certificates to use in the new store location. The store will offer thousands of upscale resale items, including a mix of gently-used donated goods, surplus goods from major department and discount stores and select new merchandise.
Regular shopping and donation hours at the Tupelo store and donation drive-thru will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday-Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday
In Tupelo, Goodwill already operates the McCullough Bookstore and ADC (1885 McCullough Blvd.) and an Attended Donation Center at 1960 North Gloster, both of which will remain open.
In addition to the Tupelo locations, Goodwill has GoodNeighbor Center stores in Batesville, Corinth, Hernando, Horn Lake, Oxford and Southaven; and Attended Donation Centers (ADCs) are located in Batesville, Booneville, Hernando, Horn Lake, New Albany, Olive Branch and Southaven.
The Tupelo store is under the umbrella of Memphis Goodwill, which was founded in 1927 as a territory of the nationwide Goodwill Industries movement. Today, the 501c3 not-for-profit organization employs about 790 people in Tennessee and Mississippi.
