The Mall at Barnes Crossing has been without a ice cream or frozen yogurt store for a while. Tutti Frutti was the last place open.
But we hear that a new frozen dessert shop plans to open in the mall food court. The name is Yolo Rolo, which sells rolled ice cream.
There are locations at the Parkway Place mall in Huntville and the Oak Court mall in Memphis.
Last year, Tupelo got a taste of rolled ice cream with the Parker Ln Pizza food truck. Parker Ln is no longer around, but the frozen concoction is back through Yolo Rollo.
So what is rolled ice cream? According to voanews.com and others, it’s often called “Thai stir-fried ice cream” because it’s made in the same way people cook meat and vegetables on a grill.
To make rolled ice cream, the flat-top grill used for making the treat is actually extremely cold.
The ice cream “chefs” add things like cookies, candy or fruit into the ice cream mixture. Then the ice cream begins to freeze. Next, the chef spreads it in a thin layer over the cold surface. After a few seconds, the chef uses a tool to scrape the ice cream off the cold surface and turn it into a roll. The rolls are then put in a cup and covered with fruit or flavored syrup.
We’re not sure when Yolo Rollo opens in the Mall at Barnes Crossing, but we’ll update you when we hear.
