Bop’s Frozen Custard will be reopening soon, say new owners Carr and Jane Sams.
The “old-fashioned ice cream” shop also has a new home at 849 N. Gloster St., in Tupelo, next to Double Barrel Restaurant & Catering.
The couple bought the franchise in July, and decided to move Bop’s from its former location in the Market Square shopping center next to Old Navy and Gap.
Bop’s opened there in 2013.
The Sams got the franchise after hearing that it was for sale.
“It all started with a phone call,” Carr said. “Jane lived in the Madison area for 22 years, and frequented the Bop’s there in Jackson on County Line Road. I knew the son-in-law of the owner of the company, and he asked if I knew anybody who might be interested.”
Being a lifelong resident of Tupelo, Carr was confident he would find somebody to buy it.
Turns out, Jane was very interested.
“It was a no brainer, really,” Carr said. “It’s very popular, and they’ve got a great product.”
Jane wanted a higher profile location, and said the building on North Gloster was an ideal spot.
In the past few months, they’ve worked to renovate the interior, building new walls and a new bathroom, getting plumbing and electrical work done and getting the rest of the building in shape for an opening they hope will be in the next two weeks or so.
“So far, it’s been busy, but it’s been a project…. we’re starting to see the light,” Jane said. “We just want to offer a quality product, and we want to do it right. We’re both big into customer service. It’s in our blood. When people walk in, they’ll be greeted, and when they leave, they’re going to be thanked. We’re going to offer quality products – we’re not going to do everything, but we’re going to do just a few things well. And we’re dedicated customer service and community involvement.”
The Sams want to work with school groups, church groups, youth groups with fundraising opportunities as well.
“We want to give back,” Carr said. “Sure we want to make a little money, but we also want to give back to our community.”
In addition to the frozen custard offerings, Bop’s also will offer hot dogs, brats and hot tamales.
Hours haven’t been set in stone, but for now, Bops will start with Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The restaurant will seat about 25, as well as outside seating and a drive-through.
