We were wondering when the Sears Auto Center at The Mall at Barnes Crossing would close, and we no longer have to wonder.
The main store is OPEN, so let’s make that clear. Only the Auto Center is closed.
And it’s been closed about two weeks, in fact. Kinda sad we didn’t really notice until now… like when I was going to get a new battery. Oh well.
Anyway, on the Sears website, the auto center in Tupelo hasn’t been listed since early May, which had us wondering. The company didn’t answer an email asking about the future status of it either, so we took that as a sign.
Speaking of sign, the main entrance to Sears facing Highway 45 is covered with posters saying it’s no longer is an entrance, and the single door that led directly to the Auto Center has a sign thanking customers and directing them to the nearest Auto Center in Memphis.
In early June, Sears Holdings, the parent of Sears and Kmart stores, said it would clsoe another 72 locations, on top of the 180 that were closed earlier this year.
The Sears at The Mall at Barnes Crossing in Tupelo are NOT on the list.
The Sears store in Biloxi closed, leaving Mississippi with only three (Tupelo, Hattiesburg, Meridian). There are more than a dozen Sears Hometown Stores – which are small hardware and appliance stores operated by independent retailers – scattered throughout the state. The Auto Centers in Hattiesburg and Meridian remain open, as does the one in Biloxi (at least for now).
