New restaurant moving into former Barnhill’s in Tupelo

A new restaurant will be opening later this year in the former Barnhill’s Buffet restaurant site in Tupelo.

The former Barnhill's on South Gloster Street in Tupelo closed last summer.

The former Barnhill’s on South Gloster Street in Tupelo closed last summer.

Opening in its place will be … drum roll, please … Super Hibachi Buffet.

As its name suggests, it will serve Japanese and Chinese food. And did I mention there will be a buffet? The owners also own the Hibachi Buffet in Columbus.

But they’re not sure exactly when they’re opening. It will take several months to renovate the building, and they’ll be replacing everything inside. However, they’re hoping to open in the fall. It just depends on the work that’s needed to gut everything.

If you’ll recall, Barnhill’s on South Gloster Street  was shuttered last July after the state Department of Health found 10 critical violations. While the agency doesn’t have the power to shut down restaurants, it does allow them to fix those issues.

The Barnhill’s owner initially agreed to fix the problems, but later opted to close the restaurant instead.

Just what we need…. another Chinese-Japanese restaurant. I guess it’s just too much to hope for some type of variety in this town besides Asian and Mexican Restaurants .
