Kilgore’s Supermarket changes ownership

You may have noticed the Food Giant ad in yesterday’s Daily Journal, with the addition of Kilgore’s Supermarket on the Food Giant logocircular.

The longtime Tupelo grocery store has indeed changed hands, and is now part of the Food Giant system.

The  purchase became official on May 1.

Enoch Smithey, who has worked for Kilgore’s for more than 14 years, has stayed on as general manager. He said James Kilgore, the former owner who passed away last year, was close friends with Food Giant president Ron Watkins.

Food Giant will keep the Kilgore’s name in honor of James Kilgore.

After his death, James’ son, Jason, operated the store. He has since relocated.

Smithey said the sale was a “unique situation” and was amicable.

Food Giant has nearly two dozen stores in Mississippi, including several in Northeast Mississippi. The company has more than 100 stores in eight states, mostly in the Southeast.
