We’ve had a great year on Biz Buzz. Thanks for reading, sending in your tips and being interested in Northeast Mississippi’s business community.
We enjoyed going back through the posts from the past year and reliving the coverage. These were posts that drew the most attention from you:
The Northeast Mississippi business community had a robust year in 2012. Some of the news was good and some of it was not so good.
We voted on what were thought were the top newsmakers in 2012. The top 10 are posted below. Under those, you’ll find a list of the runners-up. PS – the full stories are in Sunday’s paper.
Agree/disagree with our rankings?
Oishi Japanese Express is now open in Tupelo.
Today was the restaurant’s first day. It’s next to Kroger on Barnes Crossing (968 Barnes Crossing Road). Oishi, in our opinion, is the most casual Japanese restaurant so far in Tupelo – excluding the sushi counter inside Kroger at Crosstown.
Oishi serves hibachi, sushi, fried rice, soup and other standard Japanese fare. Customers order at the register and the food is brought to the table on a styrofoam plate or in a foam box.

Drumroll please for the last gas price post of 2013 ….
Gas prices are creeping back up compared to last week’s numbers. The cheapest gas today in Northeast Mississippi is in Sherman, according a Daily Journal survey of stations.
It’s $2.99 in Sherman right now.
Most expensive: $3.17 in Oxford
Reminder: This survey is designed to find the cheapest gas. The cities with the “most expensive” title are the ones that came in at the bottom of our cheapest gas list. There are other stations with more expensive gas, but we aren’t hunting for that. We’re looking for the station where you are going to spend the most money when you want to find cheap gas. Make sense?
The building renovations are coming along on the new Restaurant South building. The North Gloster building previously was Shoney’s.
Blair Hughes, and her husband, Hamp, hope to open the restaurant in January or February (previous coverage). Blair will operate Restaurant South in addition to her current restaurant, Park Heights.
As of today, the exterior has shed its Shoney’s look. What do you think?
The Don’t Be Cruel BBQ Duel is scheduled for March 15 and 16 in Fairpark.
Look at this awesome poster we found for the event:
Slow week for restaurant inspections in Lee County, but we’re betting the inspectors are off for the holidays. No new inspections this week, but a few new ones have been posted from last week.
The state Department of Health regularly inspects restaurants and food facilities.
The facilities are graded from A to C. “A” is the best. “C” is the equivalent of failing, but the inspection isn’t bad enough to merit the closure of the restaurant.
The following Lee County facilities were inspected between Dec. 20 and today.
The facilities are listed as they are in the MSDH system, even if there are typos.
